Defining Dermatology

While the front office girl is very nice - my experience was less than what anyone should expect. I called in for a basic laser treatment that was expected to be $100-$200. When booking the appointment and asking for pricing, I was placed on hold for a good ten minutes and then waited for a call back to complete the process and go through the new patient set up. Less than an hour from my appointment, I receive a call telling me I needed to pay the appointment consultation deposit of $175 and that it would go towards my services. I ask how that works if my cost is under that amount. After a brief hold it then changed to a consultation fee of $175 which would not go towards my services - because I was a new patient. They knew I was a new patient the week before when going through the whole process, why was this never discussed? Not only that, but it changed from a deposit to a fee in the matter of minutes?! Overall, my confidence in this establishment plummeted once I got that call today. It felt very unprofessional and sneaky.

Incredibly Unprofessional This clinic has been a nightmare to contact. During the summer of 2025, I had an appointment that I scheduled and showed up for exactly on time only to find that the doors were locked and no one appeared to be inside . I called the main desk several times and no one answered, so I went home as I could not leave a voicemail. When I got home, I got a call from the clinic asking where I was. I explained the situation and traveled back to the office. No apology from the clinic. After that, I scheduled another appointment several weeks later figuring this would not be an ongoing issue. Before my appointment, I realized I had a scheduling conflict, was also coming down with a sickness, and had questions about the procedure (which was very expensive), so I tried calling the clinic approximately FIVE TIMES during business hours. Again, no answer. I even texted one of their numbers saying I had called several times just as evidence that my calls were not going through. The day of the appointment, they finally called asking where I was and I stated I was sick and had questions about the procedure which were not answered. Instead of apologizing, hey claimed that I should have also emailed them. Of course, they never explained this was their preferred or sole method of communication until this moment. Since then, I received a $150 bill in the mail due to the missed appointment. The clinic is also threatening to send to the bill to collections since I refuse to pay. I have called the clinic over 10 times about the issue, stating that this is an unfair way to treat a patient who has never missed a medical appointment ANYWHERE. I have managed to talk to a woman at the front desk a few times and each time she has claimed that billing will call me back. They never have. Instead, I've received bills in the mail for an appointment I tried several times to call about and now a passive aggressive email threating to send the bill to collections Be warned! I cant say a medical clinic has ever treated me this poorly. Disappointing because it's hard to find a clinic recommended for people of color in Portland. Good doctor, but billing staff is awful and it appears other patients have dealt with the same lack of communication.

I had a great experience at Defining Dermatology today. The staff was incredibly helpful and especially kind when it came to booking my appointment and handling my insurance—it made the process super smooth. Dr. Qutub was excellent! He took the time to recommend a couple of prescriptions and provided clear, detailed instructions so there was no confusion. I really appreciated how thorough he was. I’m looking forward to seeing the improvements and following up in 90 days. Highly recommend this place!
