I have been a patient of Dr. Patel since 2018 when I very suddenly came down with a mysterious illness and strange symptoms. I felt terrible and didn't know where to turn for help after seeing multiple doctors who did nothing for me. When my family physician told me "it was all in my head", I finally ended up at Dr. Patel's office thanks to a friend suggesting I try functional medicine. She listened to me and asked so many questions. I finally felt respected and cared for. She took the time to really get to know me and delved into finding the root cause of all my symptoms. It took some time, effort and patience but I got so much better and I will be forever grateful to her. I moved to Colorado a few years ago and just reconnected with her in Ohio on my last visit. Dr. Patel has changed my life for the better and she has my utmost respect. I recommend her to anyone who is looking to improve their health and well being so they can live life to its fullest.

Unfortunately, despite many positive recommendations, I had a very bad experience with Dr. Patel. In our initial appointment, she told me that “fear and anxiety are large parts of Long Covid.” This unfortunately mimics psychologizing and misogynistic language about Long Covid that prevented me from getting proper care as a former college athlete. She also repeatedly recommended brain retraining, telling me that my “mast cells are fearful” when I mentioned that large blood draws had caused me crashes in the past. When I asked a question about why she recommended a particular treatment she said I was very sick, and “[my] body is losing.” I also gave the practice feedback on improving the elimination diet resources (giving education on how to get nutritional needs properly met and maintaining a positive relationship with food during an elimination diet) as well as improving the almost unreadable patient notes. The front office promptly responded to this feedback. Dr. Patel did do some helpful tests and had some ideas about addressing mold in our home and adding certain supplements that were useful; however, the harmful language she used, lack of appropriate guidance on the elimination diet, and lack of awareness of what it means to live with an energy-limiting illness meant that my symptoms worsened significantly as her patient. I hope that my feedback can be used to improve the quality of care given so that other patients do not have to go through the same thing.

I began seeing Dr Patel 5 years ago. I've never had another physician like her - so thorough, caring, able to see the big picture (which is critical for a physician). She is also very knowledgeable, accessible, and kind. As a patient I would tell you she has changed my life, helped me to improve the quality of my overall wellbeing. I am very grateful to have Dr Patel as my doctor!
