About this clinic

UAB St. Vincent's Advanced Wound Center, located in Birmingham, specializes in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic and complex wound healing. The clinic uses pressurized oxygen chambers to support tissue repair and reduce infection risk in patients with non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, and other conditions where standard wound care has reached a plateau. Treatment protocols are individualized following an initial wound assessment, and the practice emphasizes an evidence-based approach to oxygen therapy as an adjunct to conventional wound management. The center is staffed by physicians with expertise in wound healing and regenerative approaches to tissue recovery.

Update. I am still seeing Dr. Guasteferro. That is due to my own stupidity. If I would have listened and done what she told me from the beginning I would be healed. But I thought I knew more than the doctor. It cost me 3 toes and part of my foot. Dr. Guasteferro, the nurses, Paula, Consuelo and Shane are good, caring people. They ALL are truly caring people. I know they are tired of seeing me.

My first visit was on 02.09.21. I got more done with the doctor than the previous 5 visits with my foot doctor. My foot doctor had me going down the wrong road for recovery. My appointment was at 8:45. I was called back at 8:45. The 2 nurses listened patiently to my concerns. They took very good care of me until the doctor and her assistant came in to look at my feet. I can tell they were concerned and gave me the attention I needed to go. I am confidant I am on the road to recovery. This is a great place and the staff was awesome. I also would like to give a special shout out to some ladies at the Wound Center: Jill, Kendyll, and Paula. All three of these young ladies have taken very good care of me. I do not know what I would have done if they were not there. These ladies are AWESOME!!!! May 18, 2021 - i found out that I have an infection in my foot. I lost it. I am scheduled for surgery and they will take the bone with the infection out. The doctor and the nurses consoled me. What a great staff. A special shout out to nurses Jill, Kendyll, and Paula. Without them I would not have made it through the day. Thank you ladies. For the past 6 weeks I have been going to the wound care center Monday - Friday 8:00 to 10:30. I have been getting treatments in the hyperbaric chamber. Shane is the young man that works in the chamber area. At first I was very nervous laying in the chamber, but Shane has taken very good care of me. We have a great time during my treatments. From Day 1 i fall asleep in the chamber. Shane comes across as a grumpy young man, but really he is a teddy bear. He has a kind heart and makes the treatments go by fast. Shane and Paula has made me feel so comfortable taking the treatments. Great employees, but better yet GREAT PEOPLE. The whole staff at the Wound Care Center is GREAT!!! From Consuelo who checks me in every morning to the teddy bear Shane all great employees. Thanks for everything you do for me.

Insurance Alert - Be careful before visiting the Wound Care Center. Our physician and surgeon sent my husband there for weekly visits after a bad leg injury. This is considered an "outpatient" facility, although nothing in the name "St Vincent's Advanced Wound Center" would tell you this. Our insurance requires a $150 co-pay for utilizing an outpatient facility, therefore, we were charged $150 each visit to see the surgeon at this facility rather than in his office (co-pay would have been $35).
