About this clinic
Dr. Richard K. Ryu, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports-medicine specialist in Santa Barbara, leads a regenerative-medicine practice focused on stem-cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections for orthopedic and sports injuries. The practice emphasizes regenerative modalities as an alternative to conventional surgical intervention for eligible patients, positioning cell-based and orthobiologic approaches as the pri
23 Years ago he performed my knee surgery (patella realignment and medial
Ligament realignment). I had many pre and post surgery appointments with him. He treated me so poorly. He was rude, entitled, mean, angry, and just generally miserable. I remember looking him up 10 years ago and all his reviews were bad. I'm suspicious of his great ratings now but maybe he has changed. The reason i waited decades to leave a review is i was just telling somebody about my worst experience with a doctor and it reminded me how terrible he was.

Dr. Ryu is a terrific surgeon. He has performed two shoulder surgeries on me, and has helped other members of my family with their injuries. Dr. Ryu will tell you what is needed to return you to health. Some may feel like he is quick to diagnose, but I believe that is because he has seen these injuries thousands of times.
During my recovery, I actually looked forward to my follow up appointments to check my progress and get the next set of challenges to get back to normalcy. Dr. Ryu and staff take their jobs very seriously, as I expect any top medical group would be, and I know they always had my best interest in mind.
If you want to be coddled, see someone else. If you can handle being told how it is, and what needs to be done then Dr. Ryu would be your best choice.

Dr.Ryu seems to be a good surgeon but his staff is incompetent and treated me very poorly and disrespectful. They refuse to answer or return my calls, They act as though they are in charge of my recovery and refused to extend my disability benefits causing me much stress, worry and anxiety. I tore my ACL and Meniscus. Dr. Ryu reattached the ACL, but did not do anything for the meniscus. I guess he thought it would heal on its own. Surgery went well but I was told by Dr.Ryu to stop doing PT after they were doing the wrong treatment for the type of ACL reattachment surgery. Months later I was told that I could continue PT. My knee is still very weak after 6 months and I’m having severe pain in the meniscus area.
I’m an electrician by trade and there is no way I can return to work at this time yet his staff is acting like I should be healed and I’m unable to get an appointment with Dr.Ryu until weeks after my disability ends since they won’t extend it again. It’s been a horrible experience dealing with his assistant and secretaries. I’m not sure if they have something against me personally or if they just treat blue collar patients like nothing compared to their pro athlete clients. The past few months have been a nightmare. It’s a shame that they can get away with being so negligent and seemingly personally vindictive towards a patient in recovery.

I had a complex knee injury in January 2022 - re-torn ACL, torn meniscus, torn medial femoral condyle, and after the MRI it was apparent I also needed a bone graft. I was to get two separate knee surgeries at least six months apart. I was willing to go to L.A. to make sure I got the best doctor possible, and even set a couple of appointments there. Then when I found out about Dr. Ryu it was a no-brainer for me. His track record is absolutely unmatched. Actually. He is one of the most accomplished orthos in the country. Getting an operation is a very serious undertaking, and especially for this complex knee injury that I had. I wanted to find the best possible surgeon. I knew I could trust Dr. Ryu from the onset. He is sharp and detail-oriented. He notices everything. He keeps track of his patients even long after the surgery. I am now back on my feet and my knee feels amazing. I knew I was getting the best possible care every step of the way. Looking for the right doctor can be a difficult search because the repercussions are massive - it is your body and the rest of your life. My advice is to find the best possible surgeon with the best possible track record. After all, everything hinges on what happens in that operating room. That is where Dr. Ryu is the best.

Dr. Ryu recently repaired my severe rotator cuff injury. My experience with his clinic, the surgicenter and the entire staff was top notch. I can not speak highly enough to the level of professionalism the entire staff provided from start to finish. Dr. Ryu was incredibly diligent and detail oriented at all steps from pre-op to the day of surgery, and his subsequent follow up with my physical therapy.
I can not recommend Dr. Ryu and his staff highly enough!
