TMJ Treatment clinics in the United States

This is the national page for TMJ treatment on Regenerated.com, listing clinics across the United States that record care for the temporomandibular joint. TMJ treatment, also called TMD treatment or care for temporomandibular disorders, covers jaw joint pain, clicking or locking, limited opening and the muscle pain that often comes with clenching and grinding, known as bruxism. Conservative care includes custom oral appliances such as occlusal splints and night guards, jaw physical therapy, heat and gentle exercises, short courses of anti inflammatory medicine and work on stress, sleep and posture. Some clinics add trigger point injections, botulinum toxin injections, arthrocentesis, which rinses the joint with fluid through fine needles, or regenerative injections such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy with dextrose and hyaluronic acid. Care is delivered by general dentists with TMD training, orofacial pain specialists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, physical therapists, and some physicians, chiropractors and integrative clinicians.

The evidence picture is clearer for the conservative end than for the newer options. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and a National Academies report on temporomandibular disorders both favor reversible, conservative care first, because many cases ease with time, self care, splints and physical therapy. Arthrocentesis and joint surgery by oral surgeons are established for selected joint problems, and TMJ joint replacement devices are FDA approved for severe joint damage. PRP, prolotherapy, hyaluronic acid and stem cell or other biologic injections for the jaw are investigational, with small trials and mixed results, and they are used off label in the United States. Botulinum toxin is not FDA approved for TMD and is also used off label. Treat any regenerative offer as an option still being studied.

A typical candidate has jaw pain, pain on chewing, headaches linked to clenching, or a jaw that catches or locks, and has had a proper exam that places the problem in the joint, the muscles or both. Clinicians often use the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, known as DC/TMD, to sort this out. Painless clicking on its own usually needs no treatment. People with recent facial trauma, a suspected infection, dental pain, nerve pain or symptoms that might come from the ear, sinuses or neck are usually sent to be checked first, and irreversible steps such as grinding down teeth or broad bite changes are usually discouraged before conservative care has had a fair trial.

Supply is spread across the country and sits mostly in dental settings. TMJ care is offered in general and cosmetic dental practices, orofacial pain clinics, oral surgery offices, university dental school clinics, hospital programs, physical therapy clinics and regenerative or integrative medicine practices that add PRP or prolotherapy. Listings concentrate in large metros such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta, while smaller suburbs and rural areas often have fewer options. Many patients start with a local dentist and travel to a larger city for a specialist opinion or a procedure.

Before booking anywhere, ask about the clinician's license and specific training in temporomandibular disorders, and who supervises each step. Ask exactly what will be administered or fitted, where an injected product comes from, and whether its use for the jaw is approved or off label. Ask for written disclosure of risks, including bite changes from long appliance use. A clear quote itemizes the exam, imaging, appliance, injections, physical therapy and follow up, and the plan should say what happens if symptoms do not improve.

This national list is not for sale. Organic order is never paid ranking, Featured slots are labeled and capped, and Verified means the clinic completed credential checks, not that it spent money. Regenerated.com is free for patients, and inclusion in the directory is not an endorsement. Use the state hubs below the list to build a shortlist of TMJ providers closer to you.

For causes, options and evidence in more depth, read the TMJ treatment guide. Two short explainers cover how listings work here: How to read a Regenerated city hub and Featured vs Verified vs organic.

TMJ Treatment in the United States, answered.

TMJ treatment is care for temporomandibular disorders, which affect the jaw joint and the chewing muscles in front of the ear. Most plans start with reversible steps: a custom oral splint or night guard, jaw physical therapy, heat, gentle exercises, short courses of anti inflammatory medicine and work on clenching, stress and sleep. These steps aim to calm overworked muscles and reduce load on the joint. Injections or procedures are usually considered only when conservative care has not helped enough.

TMJ regenerative therapy usually means platelet rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy with dextrose, hyaluronic acid or, less often, stem cell or other biologic injections into or around the jaw joint. Small trials suggest some patients with joint degeneration report less pain, but studies are limited and results are mixed. These injections are used off label in the United States and are generally cash pay. Ask what conservative care you have already tried and what evidence the clinic relies on.

TMJ regenerative therapy is easiest to find by starting from the state hub below this national list, then checking the nearest larger metro. Patients in suburbs, for example around St. Louis in Missouri, often find that few local practices offer PRP or prolotherapy for the jaw, while dentists nearby can handle the exam and splint. Filter profiles for the treatment, confirm the clinician's TMD training, and ask whether follow up can happen closer to home.

A good candidate for TMJ treatment has jaw pain, pain on chewing, headaches tied to clenching, or a jaw that catches or locks, confirmed by an exam of the joint and muscles. Painless clicking alone usually needs no treatment. People with recent facial injury, suspected infection, dental pain or symptoms that may come from the ear, sinuses or neck are usually checked for those causes first. Irreversible bite changes are generally discouraged before conservative care has had a fair trial.

A course of TMJ care usually begins with an exam, a review of habits such as clenching and grinding, and sometimes imaging of the joint. Reversible care follows, often a fitted splint, physical therapy and home exercises, with follow up visits to check pain and jaw opening. If progress stalls, a clinician may discuss injections, arthrocentesis or referral to an oral surgeon. The plan should explain in writing what each next step is and why it is being offered.

The cost of TMJ treatment is driven by the type of clinician, the exam and imaging, the appliance material and fitting, physical therapy visits, any injections and whether a procedure is needed. Dental and medical insurance may treat the same plan differently, and regenerative injections are usually cash pay. This page publishes no averages because clinics bundle services in different ways. Ask each provider for an itemized written quote and confirm coverage with your insurer before starting.

You can verify a TMJ provider's license through the dental board or medical board in the state where they practice, since each state runs a public license lookup. Physical therapists and chiropractors are licensed by their own state boards. Check that the license is active, look for any public discipline, and ask about specific training in orofacial pain or temporomandibular disorders. A Verified label on a profile means the clinic completed credential checks with Regenerated.com.

Organic order on this TMJ treatment page is never sold, so no clinic can pay to rank higher in the main list. Featured slots are paid placements that are clearly labeled and capped in number. Verified means the clinic completed claim and credential checks described in the vetting materials, not that it spent money. Regenerated.com is free for patients, and inclusion in the directory is not an endorsement of any clinic or treatment.
