Biofeedback Therapy clinics in the United States

This is the national page for biofeedback therapy on Regenerated.com, listing clinics across the United States that record the treatment. Biofeedback therapy, also called biofeedback training or applied psychophysiology, uses sensors on the skin to measure a body signal and show it back to you on a screen or through sound, so you can learn to change it. Common forms include surface electromyography (EMG or sEMG) for muscle tension, thermal biofeedback for skin temperature, heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback for breathing and heart rhythm, electrodermal feedback for sweat gland activity, pelvic floor biofeedback with internal or external sensors, and neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback, which trains patterns of brain electrical activity. Nothing is injected or swallowed: the equipment measures and displays, and the patient does the work. Psychologists, physical therapists, pelvic health specialists, physicians, nurses and certified technicians deliver it, and patients usually compare it with cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation training, physical therapy, medication and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

The evidence picture depends heavily on the form and the condition. Pelvic floor biofeedback has strong support for dyssynergic defecation, a type of chronic constipation, from controlled trials led by Satish Rao and colleagues, and gastroenterology guidelines recommend it. Thermal and EMG biofeedback have long been included in headache guidelines for migraine and tension type headache, and biofeedback assisted pelvic floor training is a standard option for some kinds of urinary incontinence. HRV biofeedback for anxiety and stress, and EMG biofeedback in stroke rehabilitation and chronic pain, show encouraging but more mixed results. Neurofeedback for ADHD has mixed findings, with weaker effects when outcomes are rated by people who do not know which group a child was in, and claims for brain optimization, autism, concussion recovery or peak performance remain investigational. Biofeedback devices are regulated by the FDA as medical devices, but clearance of a device concerns the equipment, not proof of benefit for every condition a clinic advertises.

Candidates are generally people with a diagnosed condition where biofeedback has evidence, who can attend sessions and practice between them. Biofeedback is often added to existing care rather than replacing it. People with new or unexplained symptoms are usually told to get a medical assessment first, and anyone in a mental health crisis needs urgent clinical care rather than a training program. Pacemakers, implanted devices, seizure history and pregnancy are worth raising before any session with electrical sensors.

Supply runs from hospital and university programs in gastroenterology, urology, neurology and rehabilitation, through psychology and behavioral health practices, physical therapy and pelvic health clinics, to dedicated neurofeedback centers and wellness studios. Listings in the directory appear in states such as Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina and South Carolina, often in metros like Denver, Colorado Springs, Scottsdale and Charlotte, and coverage in rural areas is thinner. Many patients travel for an initial assessment and then continue with home training or a closer provider.

Before booking anywhere, ask who assesses you, who conducts the sessions, what their underlying license is and who supervises technicians. Ask exactly which form of biofeedback is proposed, which signals are measured, and what equipment is used. Ask for written disclosure of risks, which are usually minor, such as skin irritation from sensors, fatigue or temporary headache after neurofeedback. Ask what a quote itemizes, whether insurance covers the assessment or training, and how progress will be measured and reviewed.

This national list is not for sale. Organic order is never paid ranking, Featured slots are labeled and capped, and Verified means the clinic completed credential checks, not that it spent money. Regenerated.com is free for patients, and inclusion in the directory is not an endorsement. Use the state hubs below the list to build a shortlist closer to you.

For mechanism, evidence and terms in more depth, read the biofeedback therapy guide. Two short explainers cover how listings work: How to read a Regenerated city hub and Featured vs Verified vs organic.

Biofeedback Therapy in the United States, answered.

Biofeedback therapy is a training method that uses sensors to measure a body signal, such as muscle tension, skin temperature, heart rate variability or brain activity, and displays it in real time so you can learn to change it. A clinician guides the session and sets practice goals. Over time, many patients learn to produce the change without the equipment. Neurofeedback is the form that trains brain electrical activity measured by EEG sensors on the scalp.

Biofeedback therapy has its strongest evidence for dyssynergic defecation, a form of chronic constipation, and good support for migraine and tension type headache and some types of urinary incontinence. Studies in anxiety, stress, chronic pain, high blood pressure and stroke rehabilitation are encouraging but more mixed. Evidence for neurofeedback in ADHD is mixed, and claims for autism, concussion and peak performance remain investigational. Ask any clinic how its proposed method matches the research for your condition.

Clinics offering neurofeedback for brain health should explain the assessment they use, whether a brain map or qEEG is involved, and how results guide the training plan. Look for a clinician with a health license, such as a psychologist or physician, overseeing care, and ask about certification from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance. Be cautious of promises about cognition or diagnosis. This page lists United States clinics only, so use the state hubs below the list to compare options.

A typical candidate for biofeedback therapy has a diagnosed condition with research support, such as headache, pelvic floor problems or stress related symptoms, and can commit to sessions and home practice. Children and adults can both take part. People with new or unexplained symptoms should get a medical evaluation first. Those with implanted devices, a seizure history or pregnancy should discuss these before sessions, and anyone in a mental health crisis needs urgent clinical care first.

A course of biofeedback therapy usually begins with an assessment of your symptoms and baseline signals, followed by regular sessions in which sensors are attached and you practice changing the readings with guidance. Most programs add home exercises, and some lend or prescribe a home device. Progress is reviewed against agreed measures, such as symptom diaries or questionnaires. The number and spacing of sessions vary by condition and response, so ask each clinic how it decides when to stop.

The cost of biofeedback therapy depends on the form used, the clinician's profession, the assessment, the equipment and whether home devices are included. Insurance more often covers biofeedback for pelvic floor disorders or headache when billed by a licensed provider than standalone neurofeedback, which is frequently cash pay. This page publishes no averages because quotes bundle different services and change often. Ask each clinic for an itemized written quote and confirm benefits with your insurer.

Checking a biofeedback provider starts with the license behind the title. Every state runs free online lookups for physicians, psychologists, physical therapists, counselors and nurses, and the Federation of State Medical Boards links to each medical board. Certification from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance shows specific training but is not a license to treat. Read patient reviews for detail about assessment, communication and follow up, not just star ratings, and ask who supervises any technician running the equipment.

A biofeedback clinic cannot buy a higher organic place on this national page, and Regenerated.com does not sell reputation management or rankings. Featured slots are clearly labeled and capped in number. Verified means the clinic completed credential checks, not that it paid. Regenerated.com is free for patients, and inclusion is not an endorsement. Patients can narrow the list by opening a state hub below it, then a city hub, to build a local shortlist.
