Neurofeedback Therapy clinics in the United States

This is the national page for neurofeedback therapy on Regenerated.com, listing clinics across the United States that record the treatment. Neurofeedback therapy, also called EEG biofeedback, neurotherapy or brainwave training, places sensors on the scalp to record electrical brain activity and turns it into real time feedback, usually a video, game or tone that responds when your brain activity moves toward a target pattern. Nothing is injected, swallowed or sent into the brain: the equipment only measures and displays. Many clinics start with a quantitative EEG (qEEG), often called a brain map, to guide the training plan. Psychologists, licensed counselors, physicians and certified technicians deliver it, and patients usually compare it with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), other forms of biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, ADHD medication and light based brain therapies such as photobiomodulation.

The evidence picture is mixed and depends on the condition. ADHD is the most studied use: early meta-analyses, including work by Martijn Arns and colleagues, reported benefits, but a later analysis led by Samuele Cortese found that effects shrank when outcomes were rated by people who did not know which treatment a child received. Uses for anxiety, insomnia, depression, PTSD, autism, concussion recovery and peak performance or brain optimization remain investigational. Neurofeedback equipment is regulated by the FDA as a biofeedback device, but clearance of a device concerns the equipment, not proof that it helps every condition a clinic advertises. Most neurofeedback is cash pay.

Candidates are generally people with a diagnosed condition who want a non drug option alongside their existing care, or who have not done well on standard treatment, and who can commit to regular visits over a period of time. Children and adults can both take part. People with new or unexplained neurological symptoms are usually told to get a medical evaluation first, and anyone in a mental health crisis needs urgent clinical care rather than a training program. A seizure history, a recent head injury or medication changes are worth raising before any session.

Supply across the country runs from psychology and behavioral health practices, through dedicated neurofeedback and brain performance centers, to integrative medicine clinics, some hospital and university programs, and wellness studios. Listings tend to concentrate in larger metropolitan areas and are thinner in rural regions, so many patients travel for an initial assessment and then continue closer to home, and some clinics supervise home training equipment.

Before booking anywhere, ask who reads your qEEG or assessment, who runs each session, what their underlying license is and who supervises technicians. Ask exactly which protocol is proposed, which brain regions and frequencies are trained, and how the clinic will measure progress against your goals. Ask for written disclosure of risks, which are usually minor, such as fatigue, headache, trouble sleeping or temporary irritability after a session. Ask what a quote itemizes, whether the assessment is billed separately, and what follow up looks like once training ends.

This national list is not for sale. Organic order is never paid ranking, Featured slots are labeled and capped, and Verified means the clinic completed credential checks, not that it spent money. Neurofeedback Therapy in the United States, answered.

Neurofeedback therapy is a form of biofeedback that records brain electrical activity through EEG sensors on the scalp and shows it back to you in real time. When your brain activity moves toward a target pattern, the screen or sound rewards it, and over repeated sessions the brain may learn to produce that pattern more easily. No electrical current is sent into the brain, which separates neurofeedback from stimulation treatments such as TMS or tDCS. A clinician chooses the protocol, often after a qEEG brain map.

Neurofeedback therapy has been studied most for ADHD, where results are mixed: benefits look smaller when raters do not know which treatment a child received. Research on anxiety, insomnia, depression, PTSD, autism and concussion is early or inconsistent, and claims about brain performance optimization are investigational. Neurofeedback devices are regulated as biofeedback equipment, which does not mean the FDA has confirmed benefit for each use. Ask any clinic how its proposed protocol matches the published research for your condition.

Neurofeedback specialists should hold a health license, such as psychologist, counselor, social worker or physician, or work under the supervision of someone who does. Certification from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance shows specific neurofeedback training but is not a license to treat. Ask who interprets the qEEG, how protocols are chosen, and how progress is measured. Be cautious of anyone who uses a brain map to diagnose conditions or promises results. Use the state hubs below this national list to compare specialists in your area.

Neurofeedback therapy only measures brain activity and trains it through feedback, while transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions. TMS is FDA cleared for treatment resistant depression and some other indications and is usually delivered by psychiatry practices. Brain light therapy, often called transcranial photobiomodulation, shines near infrared light on the head and remains investigational for brain conditions. Some clinics offer several of these, so ask which one is proposed and why it fits your diagnosis.

A typical candidate for neurofeedback therapy has a diagnosed condition, such as ADHD, and wants a non drug option alongside existing care, or has not responded well to standard treatment. Candidates need to attend regular sessions over weeks or months. People with new neurological symptoms should see a physician first, and anyone in a mental health crisis needs urgent care. Tell the clinic about seizures, head injuries, implanted devices and medications before starting, because these can affect how training is planned.

A course of neurofeedback therapy usually starts with an intake interview, symptom questionnaires and often a qEEG brain map. Training sessions follow, in which sensors are placed on the scalp and you watch a screen or listen to sounds that respond to your brain activity. Progress is reviewed against agreed measures, and protocols may be adjusted. The number and spacing of sessions vary by person and condition, so ask each clinic how it decides when training is working and when to stop.

The cost of neurofeedback therapy depends on whether a qEEG is included, the clinician's license, the length of the program and whether home equipment is part of the plan. Insurance rarely covers neurofeedback on its own, though some plans cover biofeedback billed by a licensed provider for specific diagnoses. This national page publishes no averages because quotes bundle different services and change often. Ask each clinic for an itemized written quote and check your benefits with your insurer.
